Education in Spain
For parents who intend bringing their children up in Spain, choosing
where to live will almost certainly be influenced by the type of
education and schooling they want for them. There are a number of
options available. Opinion varies but the consensus is that children
aged 10 years or less adapt and integrate more readily into state
schools than older children. It might prove helpful for your child
to have Spanish lessons here in the UK, prior to moving
to Spain.
State Schools
Families that want to integrate fully into the Spanish community
usually enrol their children into state schools. State education
is free and all teaching is in Spanish. The general standard of
education is at minimum comparable to UK state schools. You need
to remember that your children will be integrating into the Spanish
culture and all lessons will reflect this culture. This could become
relevant should you decide to return to the UK before you child's
education is complete.
The school day starts earlier than in the UK and generally finishes
early afternoon. Spanish children, however, stay at school for an
extra year. Each school usually caters for children aged 4 to 18.
To enrol your child you will need to apply to the provincial governor's
office and you will need to be able to validate their schooling
so far. This can be done before you move, however, the majority
of schools will accept pupils on a provisional basis until all the
paperwork is finalised. You will need to provide proof of residency
in Spain, together with your passport and a Spanish bank account.
The best Spanish state school is generally considered to be San
Jose, in San Pedro on the Costa del Sol.
Private Schools
Private schools normally follow the Spanish curriculum, although
some offer a choice between the International Baccalaureate and
the Spanish Bachillerato. Lessons are in Spanish. To help newcomers
some schools provide, or offer, intensive English tuition at primary
level.
International Schools
If you have a child who is in the middle of GCSEs or A-levels,
you should strongly consider an international school. Subjects are
taught in English with Spanish taught as a foreign language. They
offer qualifications recognised by British universities and prepare
pupils for the International Baccalaureate. A small number offer
a curricula that deal with British AS and A-levels. Some schools
provide a combined English and Spanish curricula, to qualify a student
for Spain or Britain.
The widest choice of international schools is on the Costa del
Sol.
