Taking
pets abroad
Preparing for the outward journey
The requirements are the same for Spain, France and Portugal. To
obtain a 'passport' your pet must first be fitted with an electronic
identity chip. Once this has been fitted and tested, they can be
vaccinated against rabies and have the necessary blood tests carried
out by your vet. Approximately six months after the tests you should
be given a health certificate for your pet.
The full procedure is detailed on the DEFRA website at: www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm/
or you can telephone the helpline on: 0870 241 1710. Alternatively
we can provide you with a printed copy, on request.
Preparing for the return journey
A few days before you return with your pet to the UK, you will
need to visit a local approved vet for them to be checked over.
This is to ensure that they are free of tapeworms, fleas and ticks.
You will be given a certificate to show that this has been done.
The full procedure can be obtained via the sources shown above
for the outward journey.
Travelling
Prior to leaving it is advisable to contact the organisation with
which you intend to travel, to make sure that you can meet their
criteria for transporting pets.
